Ryland Grace's Stars

Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary on the real stars within 20 light-years of the Sun. The story's made up, the stars aren't. Plus the Hail Mary in 3D, and a small game.

Chain Fishing

At Tau Ceti, Grace builds ten kilometres of chain, 200,000 links, to fish for whatever lives deep in the air of the planet Adrian. Your turn: hover the Hail Mary on its engines and drag the chain's end through the swarms below.

Hold (mouse, finger or Space) to sink, let go to climb. The ship follows you
Deeper life is worth more. A second swarm in the same dive counts double, a third triple
Climb back to the top of the air to bank your catch. Burn through the hull or run out of fuel first, and you lose what you haven't banked
The lower you hover, the hotter the hull: the thick air throws the engines' heat back. Watch for gusts
